Education

Winona places a high emphasis on education within the community.  Winona was home to the first teacher’s college west of the Mississippi River established in 1858 now Winona State University. 

There are great choices in Winona for education!  Winona Area Public Schools serves students in pre-school through 12th grade.  They are celebrating their sesquicentennial 1861-2011.  Winona is home to private and parochial schools also serving pre-school through 12th grade offerings including:  Winona Area Catholic Schools, Bluffview Montessori, St. Martins, St. Mathews, Hope Lutheran High School, Cotter Schools and Charter Schools including Ridgeway Community School, Dakota Area Community School and Riverway Learning Center.

Three higher education facilities are located in the City of Winona with over 12,000 students.  Saint Mary’s University, Winona State University and Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical provide higher education offerings for students. 

Winona State University

Winona State University offers 80 under graduate programs.  Winona State University has the College of Science and Engineering committed to furthering the 21st Century advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  They have a broad range of major, minor, and pre-professional programs, as well as basic skills providing research-rich learning environments.

St. Mary's University

St. Mary’s is a Lasallian Catholic University and has over 60 majors. St. Mary’s University enrolls approximately 1,300 undergraduates in Winona.  They enroll over 5,000 students at multiple locations in the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin as well as overseas.

MN State College Southeast Technical

Minnesota State College Southeast Technical offers over 80 academic programs.  Minnesota State College Southeast Technical offers a program in Industrial Technology, Electronics Technology and numerous other technical programs.  The current enrollment is 2,500.
